Emmy-Nominated Series

Breaking the Stigma:
The State of Mental Health in Schools

When investigators discovered a former student in rural Fair Haven, Vermont had guns and a detailed plan to attack a high school, the state plunged into a national debate. In this series, WCAX investigates mental health supports in schools, from traditional counseling to newly emerging programs, including student-run mediation circles.

In our story, the mother of one of the Columbine shooters emphasizes the need for these supports. Since airing, the series has served to raise awareness of these mental health programs and boost support of nonprofits such as We R H.O.P.E. — helping bridge barriers between school staff and students in need.
